A work from one of Picasso's most fascinating late drawing cycles.

During the winter of 1953–54, the 72-year-old Picasso entered an extraordinary period of concentrated drawing. Over little more than two months he produced the body of work that became known as La Comédie Humaine, populated by artists, models, spectators, lovers and figures drawn from an imagined classical world.

Tériade devoted an entire double issue of his celebrated art journal Verve to the series in 1954. The publication was produced in Paris with Mourlot Frères, the legendary lithographic workshop responsible for printing work by many of the defining artists of the twentieth century.

This example, Plate VII, carries Picasso's date 31.1.54 within the image and comes from that original 1954 publication.

There is something wonderfully immediate about these works. Picasso was drawing quickly and obsessively, revisiting the relationship between the artist, the model and his own ageing identity. They feel closer to pages pulled from his studio than conventional editions made for the art market.
