A solitary figure stands against a dense field of broken colour, her body turned away as one eye meets our gaze. Broad, warm passages of paint describe her back, while her fragmented face echoes the restless marks surrounding her.

Yellow, pale green and pink interrupt the dark background. A heavy black outline holds the figure apart, giving her a striking presence within the crowded composition. There is a tension between exposure and reserve: she allows herself to be seen while remaining difficult to read.

Within Konts’s wider exploration of meaning, the painting invites a personal question: how do we hold on to a sense of ourselves amid everything surrounding us?
