"Femme au ruban" (1956)

Gouache, watercolour and India ink on handmade paper. Signed lower right. Edition 3/25.

A vivid portrait built from Picasso’s familiar vocabulary of fractured planes, heavy black line and saturated Mediterranean colour. The sitter emerges through overlapping passages of cobalt, vermilion, yellow and green, her face moving between profile and frontal view.

The loose painted ground gives the work an unusually immediate quality. Against it, Picasso’s graphic line becomes almost architectural: hair, eyes and features reduced to a handful of confident marks.

The result is intimate rather than monumental. A domestic-scale Picasso with much of the visual language that made his portraits of the post-war period so recognisable.
