One of Matisse’s great late images, transported to the French Riviera.

La Danseuse Créole began life around 1950 during the extraordinary final chapter of Matisse’s career, when scissors and sheets of painted paper became his primary tools. The work was inspired by the celebrated dancer and choreographer Katherine Dunham and became one of the defining images of his papiers découpés.

In 1965, more than a decade after Matisse’s death, the image was chosen to promote Nice and the Musée Matisse.

The poster was produced in Paris by Atelier Mourlot, the legendary lithographic workshop whose presses were used for Picasso, Miró, Chagall and many of the most important artists of the twentieth century.

This is an original period printing from 1965 rather than a later decorative reproduction. The present example is linen-backed and described by the seller as being in A+ condition.

At almost a metre tall, it has the presence of a major work on the wall.
