The work was inspired by the celebrated dancer and choreographer Katherine Dunham and became one of the defining images of his \u003cem\u003epapiers découpés.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 1965, more than a decade after Matisse’s death, the image was chosen to promote \u003cstrong\u003eNice and the Musée Matisse\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe poster was produced in Paris by \u003cstrong\u003eAtelier Mourlot\u003c\/strong\u003e, the legendary lithographic workshop whose presses were used for Picasso, Miró, Chagall and many of the most important artists of the twentieth century.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is an original period printing from 1965 rather than a later decorative reproduction.
